What is an Eclipse Adjustable Limiting Orifice (ALO) valve used for?
An Eclipse Adjustable Limiting Orifice (ALO) valve — part numbers 500605 through 500609 for 3/4" through 2" NPT — is installed in a gas valve train to set and limit the maximum gas flow rate to a burner or burner zone. These are V-port, brass body valves with a maximum inlet pressure of 40 PSI. The unique V-port design allows extremely fine gas flow and air/gas ratio adjustment. The orifice is set during commissioning to establish the correct maximum firing rate, then locked in position. ALO valves are important for multi-burner systems where each zone needs individual flow control, and are commonly required by combustion safety standards. How do I identify the correct Eclipse igniter for my burner?
The correct Eclipse igniter is determined by thread size (1/2" NPT, M14×1.25, 1/4" NPT), insertion length, and gap setting. Read the part number off the existing igniter body — it will be stamped there. If unreadable, consult the Eclipse burner's installation and operating manual (IOM), which specifies the correct igniter part number for your burner model. Yes. Eclipse, Inc. was founded in 1908 in Rockford, Illinois and operated as a family-owned company for most of its history — the last president, Lach Perks, was the founder's grandson. In October 2014, Eclipse was acquired by Melrose Industries' Elster Gas division for $158 million. What is the difference between an Eclipse flame rod and a spark igniter?
A spark igniter creates the high-voltage spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture at burner startup — firing only during the ignition trial (typically 2–5 seconds). A flame rod does not spark — it detects the presence of flame after ignition by conducting a small ionization current through the flame to ground. The burner control uses this signal as proof-of-flame to keep the gas valve open. Some Eclipse burner configurations use a combination igniter/flame rod that both sparks to ignite and senses the flame; others use separate components. Replace both if either shows carbon fouling, cracking, or an eroded tip — a faulty flame rod causes nuisance lockouts even when the burner is firing normally.
