Maxon Corporation — industrial combustion since 1916. Maxon Corporation was founded in 1916 by Harry Maxon in Muncie, Indiana, where the company remained headquartered throughout its history. For over 90 years the company was a pioneer in industrial combustion — burners, gas valves, flow control systems, and combustion accessories for process heating across petrochemicals, power generation, metals, food processing, automotive, and more. Maxon was notably the first industrial burner manufacturer to receive ISO 9001 certification. In November 2007, Honeywell completed the acquisition of Maxon Corporation for approximately $185 million, integrating Maxon into Honeywell's Environmental and Combustion Controls (ECC) business to expand Honeywell's reach into industrial process heating. Maxon continues to operate as Maxon, A Honeywell Company from its original Muncie, Indiana manufacturing site, where the team now develops low-NOx and hydrogen-ready burner technologies. Maxon's end markets include automotive painting lines, food processing ovens, industrial dryers, kilns, chemical processes, glass furnaces, plastics thermoforming, printing oxidizers, and textile processing.

Maxon Electro-Mechanical Gas Safety Shut-Off Valves — Complete Line

Maxon electro-mechanical gas valves are industrial safety shut-off valves for gas fuel lines on industrial burners, boilers, ovens, furnaces, dryers, and process heating equipment. When power is removed — by a flame safeguard, emergency stop, or safety interlock — a powerful internal spring closes the valve in less than 1 second, cutting off gas flow. They are required by NFPA 86 (Ovens and Furnaces) and NFPA 87 (Fluid Heaters) on most industrial combustion installations. Available in 3/4" through 6" pipe sizes, cast iron through stainless steel bodies, automatic or manual reset, normally closed or normally open. All Maxon EM valves carry FM, CSA, UL, and CE approvals and are SIL 3 capable per IEC 61508. Contact us or call (901) 458-2000 with your full nameplate model number to confirm availability and lead time.

How to Read a Maxon Gas Valve Model Number

Example: 150 S MA 11 -AA11-BB21A0
150 = 1-1/2" pipe size  ·  S = standard flow body (C = large capacity, H = high capacity)  ·  M = motor actuator  ·  A = automatic reset (M = manual reset)  ·  11 = normally closed shut-off (21 = normally open vent, 12 = NC hazardous location, 22 = NO vent hazardous location)  ·  -AA11-BB21A0 = solenoid, voltage, switch, and option codes (match exact nameplate). Sizes: 075 = 3/4", 100 = 1", 125 = 1-1/4", 150 = 1-1/2", 200 = 2", 250 = 2-1/2", 300 = 3", 400 = 4", 600 = 6". Source: Honeywell/Maxon product page and valve instruction manual.

SMA11 Series — Auto Reset · NC Standard Body · Automatic Reset · Normally Closed Shut-off · All Pipe Sizes

SMA11 = Standard flow body, Motor Automatic reset, Normally Closed shut-off. The most commonly specified Maxon EM gas valve. Opens when energized; closes in <1 second when de-energized (power lost or safety circuit opens). Automatic reset means the valve reopens automatically when power is restored and the flame safeguard sequences through a new ignition trial. Used on most industrial furnace and oven gas trains. Available in 3/4" through 6" pipe sizes with suffix codes for solenoid type, voltage, and switch packages per your application requirements.

SMM11 Series — Manual Reset · NC Standard Body · Manual Reset · Normally Closed Shut-off · All Pipe Sizes

SMM11 = Standard flow body, Motor Manual reset, Normally Closed shut-off. Required by NFPA 86 for certain industrial furnace applications where a supervised manual restart is mandatory after a safety shutdown. After the valve closes on a safety event, a technician must physically push the manual reset button before the valve can reopen — it will not reopen automatically even when power is restored. This ensures the system is inspected before re-ignition. Critical in applications where NFPA, insurance, or AHJ requirements mandate manual restart after flame failure.

SMA21 / SMM21 — Normally Open Vent Valves Standard Body · Auto or Manual Reset · Normally Open Vent Valve · All Sizes

Normally open vent valves are the inverse of shut-off valves: they are open when de-energized (no power) and close when energized. Used on gas train vent lines — when the main gas train shuts off, the vent valve opens to purge any trapped gas to atmosphere safely. Also used in process purge lines where gas flow is needed during off/power-lost conditions. The SMA21 (automatic reset) and SMM21 (manual reset) follow the same sizing and body options as the shut-off valve series.

Frequently Asked Questions — Maxon Igniters & Gas Valves

Common questions from combustion engineers, burner technicians, and industrial maintenance teams about Maxon igniters and electro-mechanical gas valves. Contact us or call (901) 458-2000 with your Maxon part number or burner model.

What does the Maxon 150SMA model number mean?

In the Maxon 150SMA model number: 150 = 1-1/2" nominal pipe size · S = standard flow body · M = motor actuator type. The trailing suffix codes (AA11, FA22, BB21A0, etc.) encode the solenoid package, voltage, switch options, and accessories. Always match the exact full model number from the valve nameplate when ordering a replacement — two valves with different suffix codes are configured differently and are not interchangeable. Call (901) 458-2000 with your nameplate model number to confirm availability.

What is the difference between Maxon automatic reset and manual reset gas valves?

Automatic reset (AR) valves reopen automatically when power is restored to the valve circuit — the motor drives the valve open and the solenoid holds it open while energized. Manual reset (MR) valves require a technician to physically push a reset button after the valve has closed; the valve will not reopen automatically even when power is restored. Manual reset is typically required by NFPA 86 for certain industrial furnace applications where a supervised manual restart is required after a safety shutdown. The reset type is encoded in the valve model number suffix and shown on the nameplate.

What does the VOS1/VCS1 switch assembly (57325, 57252) do?

VOS = Valve Open Switch. VCS = Valve Closed Switch. The 57325 VOS1/VCS1 switch assembly provides position feedback from the gas valve to the flame safeguard control — when the valve is fully open the VOS actuates; when fully closed the VCS actuates. Both are SPDT contacts. Flame safeguard controls typically require proof of valve closure before allowing a new ignition trial, and proof of valve open to confirm gas flow. The 57252 is the same function for 2" to 3" RS valve bodies. These switches are signal duty only — not for operating loads.

Which Maxon igniters cross-reference to Auburn, Eclipse, Crown, and Champion parts?

Key confirmed cross-references: Maxon 18110 = Auburn I-101 · Eclipse 16160 · Crown CA500 · Champion UY-6 (10mm × 1mm thread, self-grounding, 2.72" total length — used on Eclipse AH and Maxon burners). Maxon 23739 = Auburn I-31-1 · Eclipse 16927 · Crown CA506 · Champion F121508 (14mm × 1.25mm thread, 1.5" extension gap — used on Maxon APX burners). Maxon 18075 = Auburn I-31 variant (14mm). Sources: Lesman Industrial, Radwell/Honeywell, BurnerParts.com, Maxon Product Assembly Number document (2016).

47789 — Kinedizer LE burners. 34043 and MX34042 — OvenPak II 400 series burners. 18118 (18mm with Rajah E9-SSN connector) and 18117 (direct-mounted flame rod) — SNF (Sealed Nozzle Flame) series and other Maxon burner configurations per the Maxon Product Assembly Number document. 23739 — APX series burners. 18110 — Maxon burners and Eclipse AH burners. 18075 — Combustifume burners. Call (901) 458-2000 with your Maxon burner model number to confirm the correct igniter.

Are Maxon electro-mechanical gas valves NFPA 86 compliant?

Maxon electro-mechanical gas valves carry Factory Mutual (FM), CSA, UL, and CE approvals and are rated SIL 3 capable per IEC 61508. They meet Fluid Control Institute (FCI) 70-2 Class VI seat leakage standards. These approvals make them suitable for NFPA 86 (Standard for Ovens and Furnaces) and NFPA 87 (Standard for Fluid Heaters) installations that require listed automatic gas safety shut-off valves. Always confirm your specific application, jurisdiction, and AHJ requirements with a qualified combustion engineer.
