The name LAARS comes from the first initials of Miller's family: his daughters Lindsey, Andrea, and Stephanie, his wife Roberta, and Avy himself. where the post-World War II housing boom had created rapid demand for swimming pool heaters. Miller developed a heat exchanger using finned copper tubing that could heat water up to nine times faster than traditional cast iron vessels (per Laars' own history at laars.com) - a design that first proved itself in California swimming pools and then transferred naturally to space-heating boilers and hot water heaters.
