What is the difference between Johnson Controls VG7000 and VG1800 (VG18) series valves?

VG7000 Series are globe valves: they use a linear stem and plug to regulate flow. Globe valves provide very good flow control linearity and are used where close modulation is required. They are available 1/2 to 2 inch, with bronze or stainless steel trim, and pair with VA7800 Series electric actuators. VG1800/VG12 Series are ball valves: they use a rotating ball with a port through it to control flow. Ball valves have much higher Cv flow factors for the same pipe size — less pressure drop at the same flow rate. They are available from 1/2 to 6 inch in threaded, sweat, and ASME Class 150 flanged end connections, and pair with M9000 Series rotary actuators (M9104, M9203, M9208, M9220). Choose globe valves where close modulation and exact flow control matter; choose ball valves where low pressure drop and high flow capacity are priorities or where pipe sizes exceed 2 inches.

What is the difference between spring return and non-spring return Johnson Controls actuators?

Spring return (SR) actuators use an internal spring that drives the valve or damper to a defined fail-safe position (fully open or fully closed) when power is removed. This is essential for freeze protection systems (valve must open on power loss), smoke control dampers (damper must close or open on power loss), and any application where a defined fail position is required by code or engineering design. Non-spring return (NSR) actuators hold their last position when power is removed — they do not have a spring. Used in general modulating control where the fail position does not matter. For Johnson Controls VA7800 Series actuators on VG7000 valves: spring return models are VA7820 (small valves) and VA7840 (large valves); non-spring return are VA7810 and VA7830. For M9000 Series on ball valves and dampers: spring return models include M9203, M9208, and M9220; non-spring return include M9104 and M9300. All can be field configured for on/off, floating, or proportional (0-10V) control via DIP switches.

Johnson Controls — the company that invented the thermostat. In 1883, Warren S. Johnson, a professor at the State Normal School in Whitewater, Wisconsin, was frustrated that a janitor had to interrupt class every hour to check temperatures and adjust basement furnace dampers. He spent three years in his private laboratory developing a solution, and in 1883 received his first US patent for the "electric tele-thermoscope" — what became known as the first electric room thermostat. It used a sealed bimetal element and a small mercury reservoir: temperature changes moved the bimetal into and out of the mercury pool to close or open an electrical circuit. In 1885, Johnson partnered with Milwaukee businessman William Plankinton to found the Johnson Electric Service Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He went on to develop the first automatic multi-zone pneumatic temperature control system — a pneumatic thermostat controlling air flow through a nozzle to operate steam or hot water valves. The company became Johnson Service Company in 1902, and grew across the 20th century through acquisitions and expansions in building controls, automotive, and facility management. The A19 Series is a mechanical line-voltage temperature controller using a liquid-filled sensing element and capillary. It actuates SPST or SPDT contacts when the sensed temperature reaches the setpoint. Available in remote bulb, strap-on, direct immersion, coiled bulb space, and averaging configurations. Temperature ranges from -30°F to 550°F depending on model. Auto reset versions return to normal when temperature recovers; manual reset (lockout) versions require a technician to reset the control after an over-temperature event — required for safety and high-limit applications. Contact ratings: 16A SPDT at 120–277 VAC. Most commonly ordered models: A19ADB-26 (40–120°F manual reset), A19ADB-2 (100–240°F manual reset, direct immersion), A19AAC-9 (100–240°F SPDT, 6' capillary).

What is the difference between VG7000 globe valves and VG1800/VG12 ball valves?

VG7000 Series (globe valves) use a linear stem and plug for flow regulation — excellent modulation linearity, available 1/2" to 2", paired with VA7800 actuators. VG1800/VG12 Series (ball valves) use a rotating ball with a bore — much higher Cv (flow capacity) for the same pipe size, lower pressure drop, available 1/2" to 6" in threaded, sweat, and ASME Class 150 flanged connections, paired with M9000 Series rotary actuators. Choose globe valves where precise modulation matters in smaller pipe sizes. Choose ball valves where low pressure drop and high flow capacity are priorities, or for pipe sizes above 2 inches.

What is the difference between spring return and non-spring return actuators?

Spring return (SR) actuators drive the valve or damper to a defined fail-safe position (fully open or fully closed) when power is lost — essential for freeze protection loops, smoke control dampers, and applications where a defined fail position is required by code. Non-spring return (NSR) actuators hold their last position on power loss — used in general modulating control where fail position is unimportant. For VA7800 Series (VG7000 valves): SR = VA7820/VA7840; NSR = VA7810/VA7830. For M9000 Series (ball valves, dampers): SR = M9203, M9208, M9220; NSR = M9104, M9300. All configure for on/off, floating, or proportional (0–10V DC) control via DIP switches.
