What is a low water cutoff and why does my boiler need one?
A low water cutoff (LWCO) is a safety device that shuts off the boiler burner if the water level drops below a safe minimum. Operating a boiler without enough water causes dry firing — the heat exchanger overheats, warping or rupturing it, and can cause a catastrophic boiler failure or explosion. Most jurisdictions require an LWCO on all steam and hot water boilers by code. Hydrolevel's probe-type LWCOs detect water conductivity — when the water level drops below the probe, conductivity is lost and the burner shuts off immediately (hot water) or after a 15-second delay (steam).
What is the difference between Hydrolevel's steam and hot water boiler LWCOs?
Steam boiler LWCOs (CycleGard CG400 series, Safgard 400/450 series) incorporate a 15-second burner-off delay and 30-second burner-on delay. The delay prevents nuisance shutdowns from water surge and turbulence inside a steam boiler — water momentarily moves away from the probe. Hot water boiler LWCOs (Safgard 500/550 series) interrupt power immediately in a low water condition — hot water systems don't have the same surge. Using the wrong type is incorrect and potentially unsafe.
What is the CycleGard Intermittent Level Test (ILT) and when do I need it?
The Intermittent Level Test (ILT), unique to the CycleGard CG400 series, automatically removes power from the burner circuit every 20 minutes for 90 seconds to verify real water (not foam) is at the probe level. In foaming steam boilers, foam conducts electricity like water — a standard LWCO could be fooled into seeing "water" when only foam is present. The CycleGard's ILT provides maximum protection for problem boilers prone to foaming, which is common in older steam systems or systems with contaminated boiler water.
What does the HydroStat do and what Honeywell controls does it replace?
The HydroStat (48-3203SF, 48-3204SF, 48-3002) is a combination control performing three functions: (1) temperature limit, (2) low water cutoff, and (3) outdoor boiler reset. The 3150 and 3250-Plus models replace Honeywell L7124A, L7124C, L7148A, L7224A, L7224C, L7224U, L7248A, L7248C, L8124A, L8124C, L8148A, and L8148C controls — confirmed in Hydrolevel's own product documentation. Select 48-3203SF (100–190°F range) for most residential boilers, or 48-3204SF (100–240°F) for higher-temperature systems.
What is boiler reset and how much fuel does it save?
Boiler reset (outdoor reset / weather-responsive control) adjusts the boiler's supply temperature based on outdoor temperature. On a mild day, the boiler runs cooler — reducing standby losses and flue losses. On a cold day, it runs at full temperature. This typically saves 10–20% in fuel in most climates. The HydroStat performs boiler reset automatically using the 48-140 outdoor sensor kit (OS-100). Remote mounting kits (48-101, 48-102, 48-103) are available when the HydroStat cannot be mounted directly to the boiler.
When should I use a VXT water feeder, and what service parts does it need?
The VXT-24 (24V) and VXT-120 (120V) automatically add makeup water when the LWCO detects a low water condition. The adjustable time delay prevents overfeeding — important to avoid diluting water treatment chemicals and causing thermal shock. Use the VXT for boilers with small, routine water losses. If a boiler is losing large amounts of water, the underlying leak should be found and repaired — a feeder should never mask a major leak.
