What is the difference between a flame rod and a UV flame scanner?

A flame rod uses flame rectification — a small AC voltage applied to the rod allows microamp current to flow through the ionized combustion gases to ground when flame is present, proving flame to the burner control. Flame rods are used for close-coupled pilot and main burner sensing in most commercial boilers and gas-fired equipment. A UV flame scanner detects ultraviolet radiation from combustion and is used in industrial burner management systems (like the Honeywell 7800-Series) where the scanner is mounted remotely. Flame rods are simpler and less expensive; UV scanners are more reliable on large industrial burners with varying fuel inputs.

What is a hot surface ignitor and when do I replace it?

A hot surface ignitor (HSI) is a silicon carbide or silicon nitride element that glows red-hot when energized to ignite the gas burner — common in residential furnaces, commercial rooftop units, and light commercial boilers. Signs it needs replacement: the burner fails to light, the ignitor glows but flame doesn't ignite, visible cracking, or low amperage draw. HSIs are fragile — handle only by the ceramic base, never the element. We stock Honeywell and other HSI replacements.

What is a Rajah connector?

A Rajah connector is a high-voltage ignition cable connector used to connect ignition wire to spark electrodes and ignition transformers in burner and boiler ignition systems. The Rajah style features a spring-loaded snap-on connection providing a secure, vibration-resistant high-voltage contact.
