Honeywell V5055 & V4055 Selection & Replacement Guide
Sep 1st 2026
The Honeywell V5055 industrial gas safety shutoff valve and V4055 fluid power actuator are among the most widely installed gas valve systems on commercial and industrial burners in North America. Selecting the wrong model combination — wrong actuator for your valve, wrong valve for your pressure class, wrong model for proof-of-closure requirements — creates code compliance failures and safety risks. This guide covers everything you need to select, specify, replace, and troubleshoot the V5055 / V4055 system.
Memphis Control Center stocks and supplies Honeywell V5055 gas valves, V4055 actuators, replacement bonnet assemblies, and seal kits for industrial burner applications across Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. The Honeywell V5055 is an industrial diaphragm gas safety shutoff valve — it does not operate on its own. It requires a fluid power actuator to open and close. The V4055 is the on-off fluid power actuator that mounts directly to the V5055 valve bonnet and drives the valve open and closed via internal hydraulic (oil) pressure.
When the V4055 actuator is energized, it builds internal oil pressure that drives the valve disc off its seat, opening the valve. When power is removed, the actuator dumps pressure and a spring forces the valve closed within one second. This is the fail-safe, normally-closed design required by NFPA 85 and most burner management system safety standards.
Key system concept: The V5055 valve body and V4055 actuator are separate components that must be ordered and paired correctly. The valve body is installed in the gas line permanently. The actuator mounts to the valve bonnet and can be removed and replaced independently. Not all V4055 models are compatible with all V5055 models — the combination must be correct for both mechanical compatibility and safety code compliance.
The shutoff valve — installed in the gas piping
The operator — mounts to the valve bonnet
The letter suffix after V5055 identifies the valve’s guide type, seal configuration, and pressure class. This is the most common source of ordering errors — knowing which letter you need before you call saves time and prevents a wrong-model installation.
Quick-opening guide · Single seal · Low pressure
The most common V5055 model. Standard on-off service with a quick-opening guide — gas flow goes from closed to fully open as the valve disc lifts. Used with V4055A or V4055B actuators for straightforward on-off burner safety shutoff applications.
Characterized guide · Single seal · Slow-opening / modulating
The characterized guide provides a more linear relationship between stem travel and gas flow — important for smooth burner light-off, hi-lo-off operation, and modulating applications. Required when using the V4062 modulating actuator. Verify flow curve characteristics match your application using Honeywell form 70-8311.
Double seal · Valve seal overtravel interlock · For proof-of-closure
The V5055C has two shutoff seals and provides a valve seal overtravel interlock when used with the V4055D or V4055E actuator (which has a proof-of-closure switch). This combination is required by NFPA 85, FM Global, and most insurance carriers for large industrial burner applications where positive valve closure confirmation is mandated.
Quick-opening guide · Single seal · High pressure
High-pressure version of the V5055A for applications where standard low-pressure ratings are insufficient. Used with V4055B or V4055E (high-pressure) actuators. Check the pressure rating table for your specific pipe size and actuator combination — maximum operating pressure differential varies by size.
Double seal · High pressure · Overtravel interlock
The high-pressure version of the V5055C. Double seal with valve seal overtravel interlock, for applications requiring both high-pressure operation and proof-of-closure confirmation. Used with V4055E actuator.
Double seal · Highest pressure class
The V5055F is the highest-rated standard pressure version of the V5055 family. Available in limited sizes. Consult Honeywell product data sheet 60-2307 Table 2 for specific pressure ratings by pipe size and actuator combination before specifying.
4-inch pipe size availability: The 4-inch V5055 is available on V5055A, V5055B, and V5055C models only. The 4-inch valve uses a flanged (not threaded) connection and requires 16 bolts (not included) with companion flanges (not included). If you need a 4-inch valve, specify V5055A, B, or C only.
The V4055 actuator model determines your voltage, opening speed, pressure class, proof-of-closure capability, and enclosure rating. Match the actuator to both the valve model and your electrical supply before ordering.
| Model | Pressure Class | Proof-of-Closure Switch | Opening Time (60 Hz) | Enclosure | Pair With Valve |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| V4055A | Standard (low pressure) | No | 26 sec standard / 13 sec fast | NEMA 1 (IP30) | V5055A, B, D |
| V4055B | High pressure | No | 26 sec standard / 13 sec fast | NEMA 1 (IP30) | V5055A, B, D, E |
| V4055D | Standard (low pressure) | Yes | 26 sec standard / 13 sec fast | NEMA 1 (IP30) | V5055C (double seal required) |
| V4055E | High pressure | Yes | 26 sec standard / 13 sec fast | NEMA 1 (IP30) | V5055C, E (double seal required) |
| V4055F | Standard | No (manual switch) | 26 sec standard | NEMA 1 | V5055A, B |
| V4055G | Standard | No (manual switch) | 26 sec standard | NEMA 1 | V5055A, B |
V4055 actuators are available in multiple voltage configurations. Common voltages include 120V/60 Hz (most common in the US), 240V/60 Hz, 24V/60 Hz, and 50/60 Hz international models. Always verify the voltage on the actuator nameplate before ordering a replacement. The voltage is also a determining factor in the opening time — 50 Hz models open slower than 60 Hz models.
Ambient temperature ratings: 60 Hz models are rated −40°F to +150°F (−40°C to +66°C). 50 Hz and 50/60 Hz models are rated −10°F to +158°F (−23°C to +70°C). The 220–240 VAC 50/60 Hz models must be mounted vertically — other models may be mounted in any position.
The proof-of-closure (POC) switch is a feature of the V4055D and V4055E actuators. When the valve is confirmed fully closed, the POC switch sends a signal to the burner management system (BMS) confirming valve closure. This is a safety function, not a convenience feature.
NFPA 85 and FM Global requirements: Many industrial burner applications — particularly large industrial and power generation boilers — require proof-of-closure confirmation from safety shutoff valves under NFPA 85, FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheet 7-45, and specific insurance carrier requirements. If your BMS has a proof-of-closure input, or if your facility’s insurance or inspection requirements mandate it, you need the V4055D or V4055E actuator paired with a V5055C or V5055E double-seal valve body. A standard V4055A actuator without POC does not satisfy this requirement.
Pairing a V4055 actuator with the wrong V5055 valve model creates either a non-functional combination or a safety code compliance failure. Use this table to confirm your combination is correct.
| Application Need | V5055 Valve Model | V4055 Actuator | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard on-off, no POC required | V5055A | V4055A | Most common combination for general industrial/commercial burners |
| Standard on-off, high pressure, no POC | V5055A or D | V4055B | Verify pressure rating by pipe size in PD 60-2307 Table 2 |
| Slow-open / modulating, no POC | V5055B | V4055A or V4062 | V5055B characterized guide required for modulating service |
| On-off with proof-of-closure (POC) | V5055C | V4055D | Double seal + overtravel interlock; required for NFPA 85 / FM POC |
| High pressure with proof-of-closure | V5055C or E | V4055E | High pressure + POC; double seal required |
| Standard on-off with manual switch | V5055A or B | V4055F or G | F/G models add a manual control switch to the actuator |
Quick reference: If you need a proof-of-closure switch, you need BOTH the V4055D or V4055E actuator AND a V5055C or V5055E double-seal valve. The POC switch on the actuator works with the valve seal overtravel interlock on the double-seal valve body — neither component alone provides the full safety function.

The V5055 has two important pressure specifications that are often confused:
The V5055A with V4055A (standard low-pressure combination) is rated for 2 psi (13.8 kPa) maximum operating pressure differential. High-pressure combinations (V4055B/E with appropriate valve models) carry higher ratings. Always verify pressure ratings from Honeywell product data 60-2307 Table 2 for your specific pipe size and model combination before installation.
Do not install a standard (low-pressure) V5055A/V4055A combination on a gas supply above 2 psi without verifying the pressure rating is adequate. The actuator may be unable to open the valve against higher line pressure, or the valve may not seat properly against higher closing pressure. High-pressure applications require the V4055B or V4055E actuator with the appropriate high-pressure valve model.
Memphis Control Center stocks V5055 gas valves, V4055 actuators, replacement bonnet assemblies (136307AA, 136308AA), and seal kits (133393A). Same-day shipping by 2 PM CT from Memphis. Call us with your pipe size, voltage, and model — we’ll confirm the right combination.
The valve bonnet assembly is the most commonly replaced V5055 service part. It contains the valve disc, guide, and seal — the components that wear with repeated valve cycling and exposure to gas contaminants. Honeywell recommends replacing the bonnet assembly (rather than individual seals) when servicing the valve. Replacement bonnet assemblies include the bonnet, seals, and grease.
| Part Number | Applies To | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 136307AA | V5055A, B, C, E — 2″, 2-1/2″, 3″ pipe sizes | Large body bonnet assembly |
| 136308AA | V5055D (high pressure) — 3/4″, 1″, 1-1/4″, 1-1/2″ pipe sizes | Small body high-pressure bonnet |
| 133393A | Seal assembly — 3/4″, 1″, 1-1/4″, 1-1/2″ V5055 valves | Includes valve seal, bonnet seal, and tube of lubricant. For V5055A with V4055 or V4062. |
| 133392A | Seal assembly — alternate sizes | Verify applicability against your valve model and pipe size |

Always verify the replacement bonnet assembly part number against your specific V5055 model and pipe size using the current Honeywell product data sheet 60-2307. Honeywell has revised part numbers across product data revisions — the part numbers above are from current published data but confirm before ordering if you have an older installation.
Close the upstream manual gas cock. Disconnect power to the V4055 actuator. Do not begin bonnet removal with gas supply open or power connected — explosion and electrical shock hazards.
Loosen the three set screws that hold the actuator to the bonnet and lift the actuator straight up off the bonnet assembly. Allow 2 inches (51 mm) of clearance above the V4055 for removal. Disconnect any damper crank arm if present.
Remove all bonnet bolts. On 3/4″ through 3″ valves, carefully lift the bonnet straight up. Inspect the inside of the valve body for corrosion, debris, or damage before installing the new bonnet.
Coat the new seals with the grease provided in the replacement kit. Position the valve seal and bonnet seal in the correct locations as shown in the installation instructions — the seal positions differ between 3/4″–3″ valves and 4″ valves. Incorrect seal positioning causes a gas leak.
Carefully seat the bonnet assembly on the valve body with seals in their correct positions. On valves with a spring below the disc, ensure the spring is centered. Tighten bonnet bolts in an alternating (cross) pattern to ensure even seating. Do not overtighten.
Remount the V4055 actuator on the bonnet, tighten the three set screws securely. Restore power and gas supply. Energize the actuator to open the valve, then de-energize to confirm it closes. Leak test using approved leak detection solution on all joints, fittings, and the bonnet area. Never return a valve to service without a leak test after any bonnet work.
The V5055 / V4055 system is straightforward to install, but several requirements are mandatory for safe and code-compliant operation.
Two-valve series installation: When two V5055 safety shutoff valves are piped in series (as required by NFPA 85 and most industrial burner codes), both valves must be the same pipe size. Size each valve independently based on flow capacity requirements — do not reduce pipe size between the two valves.
The most common field problems with the V5055 / V4055 system fall into a few categories. Here is where to start.
Check first: Verify power is reaching the actuator (measure voltage at actuator terminals). If power is present and the actuator is humming but the valve won’t open, the line pressure may be exceeding the actuator’s rated opening force — confirm the gas supply pressure is within the rated operating pressure differential for your model combination. A standard V4055A cannot open a V5055 against more than 2 psi pressure differential. If pressure is within spec, the actuator may have lost hydraulic oil internally — replace the actuator.
Check first: Valve seal or bonnet seal is worn or damaged. When the seals degrade, the valve disc does not seat fully on de-energization. Remove the actuator and inspect the bonnet — if the seals show wear, hardening, or damage, replace the bonnet assembly. Also check for debris on the valve seat that prevents the disc from seating. If the valve has cycled many thousands of times, the seal condition should be the first suspect.
Check first: Confirm you have the correct actuator (V4055D or V4055E) and the correct double-seal valve (V5055C or V5055E). A V4055A (no POC switch) will never satisfy a proof-of-closure input. If the combination is correct, check that the actuator is fully de-energized and the valve is fully closed — the POC switch activates only on full valve closure. Inspect the valve seal for wear that might prevent full seating. Confirm switch wiring is correct at the actuator terminal block.
Check first: Gas leakage at the bonnet indicates either a failed or incorrectly seated seal, or a damaged bonnet assembly. Shut off the gas supply immediately and de-energize the actuator. Do not return the valve to service until the bonnet assembly is inspected and replaced as needed. When reinstalling, verify the valve seal and bonnet seal are in the correct positions for your pipe size (positions differ between small and large body valves) and coated with the provided grease before tightening the bonnet.
Check first: Verify the actuator model. The standard V4055A/D opens in 26 seconds at 60 Hz — if your burner management system requires a faster opening time, you need the fast-opening model (13 seconds at 60 Hz). If the actuator is the correct fast-opening model but is opening slowly, check the hydraulic oil level in the actuator — a slow opening can indicate low oil. Also verify the supply voltage is within the rated tolerance.
Check first: The three set screws must be fully loosened before attempting to lift the actuator. On older installations, the actuator may be stuck to the bonnet from years of heat cycling — gentle side-to-side rocking while lifting straight up usually breaks it free. Do not pry against the actuator body or the bonnet flange. Ensure the gas is shut off and power is disconnected before removing the actuator. Allow 2 inches (51 mm) of clearance above the actuator for vertical removal.
The V5055 / V4055 is the current replacement for several discontinued Honeywell gas valve systems. If you have an older valve on your burner, here is the current replacement path.
| Old / Discontinued Model | Current Replacement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| V4034 Actuator | V4055A/B/D/E Actuator | The V5034 valve body must also be replaced with V5055 or V5097 when replacing V4034 with V4055. V4055 will not mount on V5034 valve body. |
| V5034 Gas Valve | V5055 or V5097 Gas Valve | Same pipe size. Select V5055 or V5097 based on application (V5097 is a cast iron body version). |
| V4004 / V8004 Diaphragm Valve | V4055 Actuator + V5055 or V5097 Valve | May require rewiring and possibly a modulating controller. Modernize to 120V/60 Hz when replacing. |
| V493 / V893 Large Diaphragm Valve | V4055A (fast-opening) + V5097 Valve | Modernize to 120V/60 Hz. V5097 is typically used for V493/V893 replacement due to body style match. |
| V9055 Actuator | V4055 Actuator | V9055 is compatible with V5055 valve bodies; V4055 is the current production replacement. |
V5097 vs V5055: The V5097 is a larger-body, cast iron alternative to the V5055 aluminum body. It is used for some high-flow and legacy replacement applications. The V5097 uses the same V4055 actuator family. If your original installation has a V5097, specify V5097 replacement parts — the bonnet assemblies and seals are different from V5055.
Memphis Control Center supplies Honeywell V5055 gas valves, V4055 actuators, replacement bonnet assemblies, and seal kits to industrial and commercial facilities across Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. Same-day shipping on common parts by 2 PM CT from Memphis.
