ASCO RedHat Series 8210 — the most widely used ASCO solenoid valve. 2-way normally closed or normally open, pilot-operated. Brass or 304 stainless steel body. NEMA 4X watertight standard; add prefix "EF" for explosionproof/watertight (e.g. EF8210G075). Available in 3/8" through 2-1/2" NPT. UL listed, FM approved, CSA certified. The 8210 series covers multiple fluid services — check the suffix: G00x/G01x models = general service (air, water, light oil), G07x models (8210G074, G075, G076) = fuel gas shutoff, rated 0–50 PSI gas. Minimum pressure differential varies by model — confirm against ASCO datasheet for your specific model number.

ASCO Series 8214 — Fuel Gas Safety Shutoff Valves. 2-way normally closed, pilot-operated, aluminum body, NBR seals, NEMA 4X. Rated for natural gas and LP gas service at 0–5 PSI. Used in burner management systems, gas trains, and commercial/industrial gas control where electrically-operated safety shutoff is required. Available in 1/2", 3/4", and 1" NPT. ASCO Series 8220 — Hot Water and Steam Solenoid Valves. 2-way normally closed, pilot-operated, brass body with EPDM diaphragm. Rated for steam service: 5–125 PSI and hot water service: 5–150 PSI. NEMA 4X enclosure. The EPDM diaphragm is specifically selected for hot water and steam compatibility — do not substitute a general service valve with NBR seals on steam. Common models: 8220G406 (1/2" NC 120V, 4.7 Cv), 8220G406-24VAC (24VAC version), 8220G408 (3/4" NC 120V).

Gas Service Series 8030 · 8040 — Gas Service

ASCO Series 8030 and 8040 — General Purpose Gas Service Solenoid Valves. Used in commercial and industrial gas control for burner management, process control, and safety shutoff on natural gas and LP gas systems. The 8040 is a direct-acting design suitable for low-pressure gas service. Common model on your site: 8040H007 (120V). Series 8030 and 8040 are frequently specified in commercial boiler and burner gas trains alongside BASO and Honeywell controls. Direct Acting Series 8262 — Direct Acting

ASCO Series 8262 — Direct Acting Solenoid Poppet Valves. Unlike the pilot-operated 8210 series which requires minimum line pressure to operate, the 8262 is direct acting — the solenoid directly opens or closes the valve regardless of line pressure. This makes the 8262 suitable for zero-pressure differential applications, vacuum service, and low-pressure systems where pilot-operated valves won't work. Available NC and NO, AC and DC, brass or stainless steel body, high flow and wide range of elastomers.

What is the difference between ASCO 8210 and 8214 solenoid valves?

The 8210 is a general service valve for air, water, light oil, and non-corrosive fluids — brass or stainless body, NBR seals, NEMA 4X, rated to 125–150 PSI depending on model. Note: 8210G07x models (G074, G075, G076) are gas-rated shutoff valves, not general service — rated 0–50 PSI for fuel gas. The 8214 is a fuel gas safety shutoff valve — aluminum body, NBR seals, NEMA 4X, rated for natural gas and LP gas at 0–5 PSI. Use the 8210 general service models for air/water/oil; use the 8210G07x or 8214 for fuel gas shutoff applications.

What does NC and NO mean on ASCO solenoid valves?

NC (Normally Closed) — valve is closed when coil is de-energized (no power); opens when energized. Most common for safety shutoff — a power loss closes the valve. NO (Normally Open) — valve is open when de-energized; closes when energized. Used for gas vent valves (ASCO 8215C series) that must be open on shutdown to vent trapped gas and closed during burner operation.

What is the difference between pilot-operated and direct-acting ASCO solenoid valves?

Pilot-operated (8210, 8214, 8215, 8220) — use line pressure to assist operation. Require a minimum 5 PSI differential across the valve. Higher flow capacity at lower cost. Direct-acting (8262, 8040) — solenoid force alone opens/closes the valve. Work at zero pressure differential, including vacuum service. If your system has less than 5 PSI differential, specify direct-acting.

What does the EF prefix mean on ASCO solenoid valves?

The EF prefix designates the RedHat II — Explosionproof and Watertight version. Example: EF8210G075 is the explosionproof version of the 8210G075. EF models are UL listed for use in hazardous (classified) locations per the National Electrical Code. The standard 8210 without EF prefix is NEMA 4X watertight only. Specify EF models for classified locations involving flammable gases, vapors, or dust.

Why do I need an ASCO 8220 for steam instead of a standard 8210?

The 8220 series uses an EPDM diaphragm specifically rated for hot water and steam. The standard 8210 uses NBR (Buna-N) seals, which are not rated for steam and will degrade with exposure to steam temperatures. Using an 8210 with NBR seals on steam causes premature seal failure. The 8220 with EPDM is rated for steam: 5–125 PSI and hot water: 5–150 PSI. Always match the elastomer to your fluid — NBR for general service, EPDM for steam and hot water.

What ASCO valve do I need for a gas vent application on a commercial burner?

Specify the ASCO Series 8215C — normally open gas vent valves. The 8215C is energized (closed) during burner operation and de-energized (open) on shutdown to vent gas trapped between the two safety shutoff valves. Common models: 8215C063 (1-1/4" NPT, NO, 120VAC, 33 Cv, 0–25 PSI gas, 1,793,250 BTU/hr) and 8215C073 (NEMA 4X). These are paired with normally closed main gas shutoff valves per NFPA 86 gas train requirements.
